Chevalier Kinesiology Tape

Kinesiology tape is based on kinesiology, the science of anatomy, physiology and body mechanics. It is based on the idea that the body can heal itself, if enabled with appropriate support. By targeting different receptors within the somatosensory system, Kinesiology Tape alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. The use of the tape involves taping over muscles to minimize pain and inflammation, relax tired muscles that are suffering from overuse and to support muscle movement. The taping is non-restrictive and allows a full range of motion, critical for athletes who are recovering from injury or seeking to avoid it. Used by top athletes since the Beijing olympics, it is now being used by more and more horses and riders
British endurance team physiotherapist Lee Clark is convinced it has huge benefits for horses, despite the lack of any official study. “It’s a case of following what we know works with humans and watching the results with horses,” says Lee, one of the equine physiotherapists at London 2012.
Its health benefits seem magical, with some marketing literature claiming it can help foals with severely elongated tendons, kissing spines, lymphangitis and more.
Note Effectiveness depends on knowledge of equine anatomy and physiology. One should never tape in such a way as to restrict circulation.
